Office memos, renewable energy, entrepreneurship, ancient spells, and coffee breaks. “Workplace Arcanum” was conceived as a sketch inside a fictitious news show, hosted by the deadpan and unfazed Lilith Espinoza, a reporter who seems to accept the situations she finds herself in without second thought. The show aims to satirize the extreme lengths people and corporations must go through daily in order to stay afloat in an increasingly competitive market. Fantastical situations such as ghosts working the night shift in a tech company, and lawyers who specialize in demonic contracts are juxtaposed with scenes of people going about their day as if it’s business as usual in an office. With a host that just as likely to quote Alesteir Crowley as she is to talk about inflation, “Workplace Arcanum” is both a novel idea for short-form comedy in general, and a poignant critique of our modern society and its dehumanizing tendencies.
