“Marcelo Evaldo Recommends” is a satirical web series that parodies the TV industry and criticism. The show’s host — TV director Marcelo Evaldo — is almost always going through some personal turmoil that spills into his reviews. Marcelo subconsciously turns his reviews into therapy sessions, offering glimpses into his personal life, feelings, and insecurities. The notion of a guy talking about the subject du jours in front of a green screen is one we have grown accustomed to, in this web series we flip that onto its head. Sure you clicked a video expecting a review of a series you’ve been wanting to see, but what you get is this weird, surreal window into a guy’s life. The over-the-top characterization of Marcelo lends to the nonsensical commentary, sometimes he is physically hurt and with torn clothes, and other times he comes in dressed in a uniform because he was working some other job, we use that to make fun of both the pretentiousness and the commercialization of TV criticism. He is emotionally unstable, and prone to outbursts, crying because a certain character reminds him of an ex-girlfriend, or completely manic because he couldn’t sleep due to his absurd personal life. The true merit of the show is that while the space around him never changes, you never know which Marcelo will show up to “review” the latest TV hit.
